Julie Stewart

Chair of the Board

Julie Stewart founded FAMM in 1991 and served as its president until 2017. Before FAMM, she was the Director of Public Affairs at the Cato Institute. An expert in the field of criminal justice reform, Julie spearheaded dozens of sentencing reforms, and her work has mitigated the impact of draconian sentencing laws for thousands of people and their families. She also serves as the Chairman of the Board of DKT International, a global group focused on reproductive rights and HIV/AIDS prevention. She previously served on the board of the Public Defender Services of Washington D.C., and was formerly a member of the D.C. Sentencing Advisory Commission, which develops sentencing guidelines for prisoners from the District of Columbia. Julie is an effective and passionate advocate, whose success in creating coalitions to confront social issues has been recognized by the Ford Foundation, the Gleitsman Foundation, and the Cause of Civil Liberties, among others.
