FAMM Statement on the Nomination of Judge Merrick Garland for U.S. Attorney General
The advocacy group hopes Garland will fulfill President-elect Biden’s criminal justice related promises

WASHINGTON – FAMM President Kevin Ring issued the following statement on President-elect Biden’s nomination of Judge Merrick Garland as the next U.S. Attorney General:

We congratulate Judge Merrick Garland on his nomination to be Attorney General. While those of us fighting for bold criminal justice reform were hoping for a nominee with a proven record on the issue, we expect Judge Garland will ably fulfill President-elect Biden’s promises to limit mandatory minimums, expand executive clemency, and provide more second chances for those who deserve them. FAMM has worked with five administrations from both political parties, and we look forward to working with Judge Garland and the Biden administration.

For nearly three decades, FAMM has united the voices of affected families, the formerly incarcerated, and a range of stakeholders and advocates to fight for a more fair and effective justice system. FAMM’s focus on ending a one-size-fits-all punishment structure has led to reforms to sentencing and prison policies at the state and federal level and is paving the way to programs that support rehabilitation for the 94% of all prisoners who will return to our neighborhoods one day.
