FAMM Statement on the Commutation of Sholom Rubashkin’s Sentence

WASHINGTON – FAMM President Kevin Ring issued the following statement today in response to President Trump’s decision to commute the federal prison sentence of Sholom Rubashkin:

We are pleased that President Trump used his constitutional authority to commute Mr. Rubashkin’s sentence. The 27-year sentence was excessive and unjust.

We hope the president is just warming up and that he will begin to review the cases of thousands of other federal prisoners who also are serving unfair sentences. They, too, deserve justice. Congress and the U.S. Sentencing Commission must act to change the laws and guidelines that produce counterproductive sentences like Mr. Rubashkin’s.

FAMM is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization fighting for smart sentencing and prison policies that protect public safety.
