FAMM releases statement on President Biden’s clemency grants
WASHINGTON – FAMM President Kevin Ring released the following statement after news of President Biden’s announcement about clemency and other federal actions related to prison programming and re-entry today.
“We applaud the president for taking these steps to improve public safety and offer more people second chances,” Ring said. “With today’s grants, President Biden has granted more commutations at this point in his presidency than the last seven presidents combined.
“We hope today’s announcement is just the beginning. We look forward to continuing to work with the administration to ensure that others are reunited with their families sooner.”
Expanding clemency is a pillar of FAMM’s Second Chance Agenda, which seeks to create as many mechanisms as possible to give people second chances, reunite families, and reduce mass incarceration.
For more than three decades, FAMM has united the voices of affected families, the formerly incarcerated, and a range of stakeholders and advocates to fight for a more fair and effective justice system. FAMM has led the fight to reform extreme mandatory sentencing laws and to promote rehabilitation and dignity for all people in prison, 94 percent of whom will return to our neighborhoods one day.
