FAMM releases statement on Derek Chauvin verdict
WASHINGTON – FAMM President Kevin Ring released the following statement on the Derek Chauvin verdict:
“We are glad to see that justice was served,” Ring said. “The jury in this case spoke quickly and clearly. We also recognize that we have a lot of work to do to create a justice system that truly values Black lives.
“We see every day how systemic racism impacts the lives Black people at each stage of the justice system. It is up to all of us to help eliminate racism, and work towards making our justice system worthy of its name.”
For nearly three decades, FAMM has united the voices of affected families, the formerly incarcerated, and a range of stakeholders and advocates to fight for a more fair and effective justice system. FAMM’s focus on ending a one-size-fits-all punishment structure has led to reforms to sentencing and prison policies at the state and federal level and is paving the way to programs that support rehabilitation for the 94% of all prisoners who will return to our neighborhoods one day.
