FAMM Partnering with 270 Strategies to Fight for Criminal Justice Reform
Longtime advocacy organization will work with grassroots engagement firm to unite families
nationwide in ongoing fight against unjust sentencing and prison policies
WASHINGTON, DC — FAMM (Families Against Mandatory Minimums) announced today it is partnering with grassroots consulting firm 270 Strategies to strengthen its capacity to mobilize and grow the number of families in the fight for criminal justice reform.
“We simply aren’t going to win and sustain the type of meaningful criminal justice reforms we need until those people most affected by today’s broken system are heard,” said Kevin A. Ring, president of FAMM. “FAMM has been raising the voices of affected families for more than 26 years. Our partnership with 270 Strategies represents our commitment to take this work to a whole new level.”
FAMM discovered long ago that the best way to reform counterproductive policies was to show how they affected real people. Over the past two decades, FAMM and its partners have helped enact dozens of federal and state reforms, which have allowed families to stay together while keeping the public safe. Despite this progress, the United States remains the world’s largest jailer.
In the coming months, FAMM will work with 270 Strategies to build and mobilize even more affected families and individuals, using proven best practices in grassroots organizing, targeted volunteer recruitment and mobilization, and the latest online engagement strategies. “If every family that’s been harmed by our justice system spoke up for commonsense reform, the politicians would have no choice but to listen,” Ring said.
“Every meaningful change our country has made over the past decade – including generational leaps in civil and human rights – happened because of the incredible power of grassroots voices,” said Marlon Marshall, a founding partner with 270 Strategies. “We’re honored and excited to be working with FAMM to help focus that grassroots power on overhauling our justice system so it is more fair and effective overall.”
The 270 Strategies team includes veterans of the Obama Administration, top leadership from the presidential campaigns of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, activists from the labor movement, public education advocates, and national and international public policy experts. Since its inception, 270 has helped nearly 300 causes, companies, and campaigns use online and on-the-ground organizing strategies to advance their goals.
