FAMM APPLAUDS PA SENATE FOR PASSAGE OF JUSTICE REINVESTMENT BILLS
HARRISBURG, Pa. – FAMM Vice President of Policy Molly Gill issued the following statement in response to yesterday’s unanimous passage of Justice Reinvestment II bills (SB 500, SB 501, and SB 502) in the Pennsylvania Senate:
FAMM applauds the Pennsylvania Senate for continuing the state’s march to a smarter, more cost-effective criminal justice system. The first package of Justice Reinvestment reforms has been a success, reducing the prison population without increasing crime. This second package is going to make sure people get parole sooner rather than later, increase use of drug treatment, and give victims the compensation they need. We’re grateful that the Senate saw the wisdom of these reforms. The House should pass them as soon as possible.
For nearly three decades, FAMM has united the voices of affected families, the formerly incarcerated, and a range of stakeholders and advocates to fight for a more fair and effective justice system. FAMM’s focus on ending a one-size-fits-all punishment structure has led to reforms to sentencing and prison policies in 6 states and is paving the way to programs that support rehabilitation for the 94% of all prisoners who will return to our neighborhoods one day.
