FAMM (formerly Families Against Mandatory Minimums), has been at the forefront of reshaping the US criminal justice system since 1991. Our mission is to advocate for a fair and effective system that upholds individual accountability and dignity while ensuring community safety. We are seeking a Vice President of Communications to lead our strategic communications, media, and marketing efforts. This pivotal role will oversee an exceptional communications team and work closely with senior leadership to drive FAMM's mission forward.
About FAMM:
For over three decades, FAMM has been instrumental in securing critical sentencing reforms at both federal and state levels. By amplifying the human stories behind unjust sentencing and prison policies, we've successfully brought attention to the urgent need for change. Our bi- partisan, collaborative approach blends public education with targeted advocacy, ensuring that policymakers understand the real impact of their decisions. Now, as we continue to expand our organizing efforts nationally, we're looking for a dynamic leader to guide our communications strategy.
Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement an overarching communications plan aligned with FAMM's goals and values. Lead the editorial direction, design, and distribution of all communications materials, including digital content, reports, and video.

Media Relations: Cultivate and manage press relationships to ensure comprehensive coverage of FAMM's issues, events, and projects. Provide strategic guidance on external messaging and narratives, ensuring alignment with organizational values and objectives. Serve as the primary spokesperson for the organization and oversee crisis communications when needed. Develop protocols and procedures to address emerging challenges and mitigate potential risks.

Brand & Content Development: Build a compelling brand identity and voice for FAMM that resonates with our audience. Oversee the creation and distribution of all communications materials, including website content, marketing collateral, press releases, and social media content. Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure consistency across all communications channels.

Team Management: Hire, manage, and retain a high-performing communications team and consultants, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities. Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment where team members can thrive.

Digital Engagement: Develop and execute digital marketing strategies to promote FAMM's programs and engage with our audience across email and social media platforms. Leverage data and analytics to inform and optimize our digital outreach strategies and measure the effectiveness of communications efforts. Identify trends and opportunities to enhance FAMM’s reach and influence.

Strategic Partnerships: Collaborate with internal and external partners to amplify FAMM's message and broaden our impact. Serve as a thought partner for other organizational leaders to articulate key program messages and takeaways.
Qualifications:

Minimum of 10 years of experience in communications or related field, with at least five years in a managerial or leadership role.

Strong background in media relations, strategic communications, and brand development.

Demonstrated success in developing and executing comprehensive communications plans and marketing campaigns.

Excellent writing and editing skills, with experience across a variety of print and online media.

Experience managing digital media production and engagement, including social media, podcasts and video content.

Experience developing and deploying website and knowledge management or CRM platforms, social media, and digital communication tools.

Proven ability to lead and develop a high-performing team, with a focus on collaboration and inclusion.

Familiarity with advocacy organizations and an understanding of the criminal justice system preferred.

Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with an understanding of structural racism and its impact on communications.
Work Environment and Benefits:

This position is based in our Washington, DC office, with three days in-office (Tues-Thurs) and two days remote (Mon, Fri)

Competitive salary ranging from $120,000 to $165,000, commensurate with experience.
