Tomorrow, people from all across Massachusetts will be lobbying their state legislators to end mass incarceration and to build stronger, healthier communities. This is a follow-up to last Saturday’s Jobs Not Jail rally. The JNJ coalition has collected nearly 30,000 signatures of people who support their goals, which include repealing mandatory minimum sentences for drug offenses. The signatures will be displayed on banners outside the State House between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. We expect it will be a very impressive sight!
There are two ways FAMM members can make their views known – by email or by phone. If possible, please send your messages tomorrow so that FAMM is part of the larger JNJ effort. But if you can’t, whenever is fine!
Send emails. Click here to send two messages, one to your state senator and one to your state representative. When you enter your address, your message will be directed to the right people. We have provided a sample message that you can use. And after you are done, please forward this message to family and friends!
Call your legislators. You can find phone numbers for your state senator and representative here. After you fill in your address, scroll down to the last gray box, “current elected officials.” Your state senator is the second name listed and your state representative is the third. Click on their names to get their contact information. Here is a sample message for your two phone calls:
[Ask to speak with an aide for your senator or representative]
Hi, my name is _______ and I am a voter in Senator ______/ Rep. ________’s district. I am also a member of Families Against Mandatory Minimums.
I’m calling because I support two bills that would repeal mandatory minimum sentences for drug offenses, House 1645 and House 1646.
Thank you for your time.
Let’s show the Legislature that voters demand change! Please let us know if you have any questions.
