(Frederick News Post Editorial) — According to GOP Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, federal sentencing guidelines are wrongheaded, ineffective and unfair. As reported in an Associated Press story last week, Paul is determined to put some flexibility into some of these guidelines, particularly in drug-related cases.
In speaking of this federal mandate, Paul said, “There is no justice here. It is wrong and it needs to change.”
In support of his argument, Paul cited the case of one Edward Clay, who was nabbed with less than 2 ounces of cocaine. Despite the quantity of the drugs in his possession and the fact that he was a first-time offender, he was slapped with 10 years behind bars in a federal prison. Talk about hard time. Read more
