Lighting the Match

It’s matching grant time at FAMM – time to make your contribution go twice as far! Board photo, Julie

When I launched FAMM twenty-five years ago, I never would have imagined that a generous supporter would match every dollar raised at the end of the year! Back then I had nothing more than a cardboard box full of letters from prisoners, and a passionate belief that what I was doing was right. I didn’t know if it would work. I didn’t know how long it would take. And I sure didn’t know how many people would join me in this fight.

From my vantage point now, I know a lot more:
  • FAMM has been successful – we’ve changed laws and policies that have reduced sentences for at least 312,000 people, and that number will continue to grow.
  • It took much longer than I imagined to raise public awareness around how many people in prison are serving too much time, but the country has finally caught on.
  • And, importantly, thousands of dedicated and passionate people have joined me in this fight for sentencing justice. People like you.

Thanks to you, FAMM has been able to reframe the sentencing discussion and make it a mainstream issue. Politicians of all stripes now admit that America’s sentencing laws are extreme and need to be changed.

And in some ways, we’re just getting started! In January, I will be handing over the reins to FAMM’s incoming president, Kevin Ring, while I remain chairman of the board. Kevin is already laying the groundwork to launch new attacks against wasteful and irrational sentencing laws and policies at the state and federal level. I’m excited about where FAMM is heading, and with your help I know we’ll get there!

Please donate to FAMM today to build our war chest for the year ahead. From now until the end of the year, your donation will be matched dollar for dollar by a wonderful FAMM supporter!

There are more lives to change. Let’s keep doing it!

 My very best,

Thank you Julie for all you have done to help families who have loved ones in prison for far longer than they deserve to be live with hope. We are still waiting in hope that our son, brother, father, uncle Jeffrey Wheat 07448-043 will be on Obama’s next Clemency recipient list. We had to write his petition ourselves because his Pardon Attorney failed him just as the sentencing laws did. Without God and FAMM we would have no hope. God bless you for all you have done. Please enjoy your family and we rejoice that an ex-prisoner will carry the torch for justice well!
