FAMM works to change mandatory sentencing laws through the legislative process on the federal and state levels, participation in precedent-setting legal cases and by educating the public.
Federal advocacy campaign
FAMM challenges federal mandatory sentences by educating Congress and the U.S. Sentencing Commission about the need to reform these laws and urging them to pass fair and proportionate sentencing policies. We mobilize thousands of individuals and their families whose lives are adversely affected by unjust sentences by providing a platform for our members to speak out against federal sentencing laws.
Our litigation project provides litigation assistance and pro bono counsel for sentencing issues considered by the U.S. Supreme Court and lower federal courts.
State advocacy campaign
FAMM promotes the reform of state sentencing laws in a number of states throughout the country, including Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, and North Carolina. We depend heavily on our 12,000 members to advocate for sentencing reform in each of these states.
Communications
FAMM works with the media to publicize the injustices of both federal and state mandatory sentencing laws and shines a light on the human face of sentencing by highlighting individuals affected by these policies. FAMM members and the public are kept informed on sentencing news through our quarterly newsletter, the FAMMGram, our website, and monthly emails. Members can also take action on legislative campaigns through our web-based Community Action Network.
In addition to the efforts of our staff, our members throughout the country also work together to educate the public and policy makers about sentencing reform.
